what to expect
ROADWAY CONSTRUCTION (THIS WINTER)
The Rogers Team through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has applied to the Corps of Engineers, TVA, and the Kentucky Environmental Protection Agency for permits to construct US 68 through the Land Between the Lakes. The eight miles of expanded and improved roadway construction has been divided into three sections. They are:
- The Trace - The interchange with KY US 68 and KY 454 (The Trace) is the first section to be constructed. The Corps of Engineers permit is a nationwide permit and concurrence by the Corps was given. TVA has granted a no objection letter for this phase of construction. Full construction of the interchange is underway. The new westbound lanes are complete in this area. The current traffic pattern is utilizing this section of westbound roadway. This will allow for the construction of the new eastbound lanes and eastbound bridge over the Trace.
- US 68 West of the Trace – The Corps of Engineers permit is a nationwide permit and concurrence by the Corps was given. TVA has issued their permit for this phase of construction. Construction of the new eastbound lanes from Kentucky Lake to the Trace is on going. Weather permitting; the contractor intends to complete the construction of the new eastbound lanes in this area before the end of 2008. Eastbound and westbound traffic will then be relocated onto the newly constructed lanes in this area. This will allow for the construction of the new westbound lanes in this area during the winter months.
- US 68 East of the Trace – The permitting for the section of US 68 east of The Trace is more complicated and the permits are not expected until the beginning of 2009. A permit is required from the Corps of Engineers but not the TVA since this section of roadway drains away from Kentucky Lake to Lake Cumberland. Construction will begin in the Devil’s elbow area as soon as the permits are received. Timber removal operations are permissible and will be on going in this area during the winter months.
Traffic Impacts
- Traffic will be maintained on the existing roadway and detours while the new eastbound lanes are being constructed. The traffic will be moved to the new eastbound lanes and the westbound lanes reconstructed. Traffic changes will be posted on this website as a part of the Public Awareness and Newsroom links.
Recreation Impacts
- Golden Pond Picnic Area has been closed by USFS until the completion of construction in this area.
- All other recreational facilities will remain open.
