ROADWAY CONSTRUCTION (THIS SUMMER)

The Rogers Team through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet received all necessary permits from the United States Corps of Engineers, TVA, and the Kentucky Environmental Protection Agency in January 2009. This allowed construction to begin on all parts of the project along US 68 / KY 80 through the Land Between the Lakes. The eight miles of expanded and improved roadway construction has been divided into three sections. They are:

  • The Trace - The interchange with KY US 68 and KY 453 (The Trace) construction will be on going through the end of 2009. The intent is to have the interchange fully operational with eastbound and westbound traffic divided by the beginning of 2010. Traffic will remain on the newly constructed westbound lanes for most of the construction in this area.

  • US 68 West of the Trace – Construction of the new eastbound lanes from Kentucky Lake to the Trace is complete. Eastbound and westbound traffic in this area was relocated onto the newly constructed eastbound lanes August 14, 2009. This will allow for the construction of the new westbound lanes in this area. The intent is to finish the new westbound lanes for this area in conjunction with the Trace Interchange and have them operational by the beginning of 2010.

  • US 68 East of the Trace – The construction of the new eastbound lanes is ongoing in this area. This construction is expected to last all summer and be completed by the beginning of 2010. Once these eastbound lanes are complete both eastbound and westbound traffic will be relocated onto the newly ced lanes. This will allow for construction to begin on the new westbound lanes in this aonstructrea.

Traffic Impacts

  • Traffic will be maintained on the existing roadway and detours while the new eastbound lanes are being constructed. The traffic will be moved to the new eastbound lanes and the westbound lanes reconstructed. Traffic changes will be posted on this website as a part of the Public Awareness and Newsroom links.

Recreation Impacts

  • Golden Pond Picnic Area and Devil’s Elbow Recreation Area have been closed by USFS until the completion of construction in this area.
  • The gun/archery ranges have been closed until further notice. This clousre will allow for the construction of a new gun range to be built using excess dirt excavated from the project.
  • All other recreational facilities will remain open.
